General
The population of Liechtenstein was 38,244 in 2017. Liechtenstein is a rather densely populated country with about 239 inhabitants per km2. The Rhine Valley is the most densely populated part of Liechtenstein. The largest municipalities are Vaduz and Schaan.
The most striking thing about the population composition of Liechtenstein is that about one third of the population comes from abroad to work in Liechtenstein for shorter or longer periods of time. The population consists of 65,6% of native Liechtensteins, 15% of Swiss, 7% of Austrians and 4% of Germans.
About 86% of all Liechtensteinians live in the countryside, about 14% live in the cities.
