Vacations and Sightseeing
Hawaii's economy runs very largely on income from tourism. Almost a third of the GDP comes from this sector. Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches and is one of the best places in the world to windsurf, because of the high waves. You can also go on beautiful walks in one of the national parks. Many travel organisations offer trips to Hawaii as a wedding destination.
The most visited attraction in Hawaii is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with approximately 3 million visitors per year. This park includes the most active volcanoes in the world. The park offers unique hiking and camping opportunities. Start at the Kilauea visitor centre to get the latest information on the trails, road conditions and safety measures. You can admire the impressive volcanic landscapes via the Crater Rim Drive. You can also drive along the Chain of Craters Road to the east and explore the coast where the lava flowed into the ocean in 2003.
Hawaii is also known for its excellent surfing possibilities. There are possibilities for beginners (mostly the south beaches of the islands), but especially for advanced surfers who are looking for "Big Waves". Hawaii is also called Surfers' Paradise.
