According to the Færeyingar Saga, written in Iceland in the 13th century, the inhabitants of the Faroe Islands converted to Christianity around the year 1000. The first bishopric was that of Kirkjubøur on the island of Streymoy. At present, about 75% of the population is Lutheran and 20% belongs to the Plymouth Brethren. There are also small groups of Roman Catholics, Baptists, Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses and followers of the Baha'i.
