Vacations and Sightseeing
At present, Zanzibar attracts less than 100,000 tourists a year, but the number of tourists is growing. The island is known for its diving spots in and around the coral reefs. Kite-surfing is also on the rise.
Stone Town is the old capital of Zanzibar with an interesting market and winding streets. There are also a number of small museums. The Sultan's Palace and Beit-el-Ajaib on the waterfront are interesting. Also check out the old slave market, which is now the site of the Church of Christ Anglican Cathedral.
The most important reason to visit Zanzibar is its snow-white beaches, especially those along the north and east coast. There are excellent opportunities for diving and also for deep-sea fishing. Zanzibar is one of the most beautiful diving areas of the Indian Ocean with beautiful coral reefs. For the enthusiasts, there are possibilities to see whale sharks or to swim with dolphins.
Zanzibar has had Arab, African and Asian influences. This makes it an exotic destination.
