Population
Since 1971, the population of Tuscany has hardly grown at all. A major reason for this is the very low birth rate, one of the lowest in Europe. That the population is still growing at all is due to a decreasing mortality rate and immigration from other regions.
Tuscany has almost 3.75 million inhabitants (2017), which represents a population density of 153 inhabitants per km2. Most people live in north-western Tuscany in an area bounded by the cities of Florence, Livorno, Massa and Pistoia.
Prato is the most densely populated province with about 600 inhabitants per km2. The city of Prato is also home to Italy's largest Chinese community, approximately 10% of the total population of 184,000. The largest city in Tuscany is Florence with about 377,000 inhabitants (2017).
