Population
Sicily has over 5 million inhabitants. On average, there are almost 200 people per km2. Apart from the southern coast, the coastal areas are the most densely populated. Most Sicilians (approx. 60%) live in the provinces of Palermo, Catania and Messina. Palermo is the largest city with around 700,000 inhabitants, followed by Catania (around 340,000), Messina (around 235,000) and Syracuse (around 125,000). The Sicilians are the descendants of the many races that have inhabited the island in the course of time.
In the past, many Sicilians emigrated to the United States due to poor economic conditions; since the 1950s, there has been a migration from the interior to the coastal areas and cities and to mainland Italy, where the north in particular was heavily industrialised at the time. Since the 1980s, many emigrants have returned to their homeland and the population has even risen slightly
