Originally, Bantu tribes lived on Pemba, after which many Persians and later Portuguese settled there. The current inhabitants of Pemba belong to the Wapemba population.
A total of about 1.3 million people live on the Zanzibar archipelago, about 400,000 live on Pemba. The islands are relatively densely populated; Pemba has about 420 inhabitants per km2.
Approximately 22,000 people live in the capital Chake Chake.
