Economy

The population of Pemba lives almost entirely from the proceeds of agriculture and fishing.

Among other things, cassava, rice, onions and tomatoes are grown. There are also rubber plantations and banana plantations on the island.

But the main source of income is the export of cloves. Pemba is the largest exporter in the world; eighty percent of Tanzania's cloves are grown on Pemba.

The main port of Pemba is Mkoani. Most ferries from Zanzibar arrive here. People who have taken the boat from mainland Tanzania arrive at the port of Wete, 30 km north of the capital Chake Chake.
