The population of Northern Ireland is 1,876,695 (2017). Most residents live in the countryside. The ratio is about 45% in the countryside and 55% in the cities. In addition to the original Irish population, there are also many descendants of English and Scottish settlers. The population density is approximately 133 persons per km2. However, the population density per county is very different.
The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast (Gaelic: Beal Feirst) with 333,000 inhabitants (2017). Other larger towns are: Londonderry of Derry, Newry, Ballymena, Craigavon, Dungannon, Lisburn, Coleraine, Omagh and Enniskillen.
