Micronesia has a total population of approximately 525,000, a high birth rate and one of the highest percentages of people under the age of 18. The people of the eastern and central islands are mainly of Melanesian descent. The people of the western islands are generally of Southeast Asian descent. The Micronesian tribes and peoples evolved in a relatively isolated environment so that they could maintain their indigenous culture for a long time. The Chamorro of the Mariana Islands were the only ones who were more or less forced to form a mengrass with the Spaniards as early as the seventeenth century. The Northern Mariana Islands and Guam are also home to many immigrants from countries outside Micronesia. Nauru had a population of 11,359 in 2017. On average, there are almost 500 inhabitants per km2. 58% of the population is indigenous. In addition, 26% of the population is from the neighbouring countries of Kiribati and Tuvalu, 8% is from Asia (Chinese and Vietnamese) and 8% is European.
Emigrants from the Gilbert and Ellice Islands are generally unskilled and work in the phosphate industry. The Chinese, who used to work in the mines, are now often carpenters or restaurant owners. Most Nauruans are of Polynesian descent. The population lives almost exclusively on the strip of land between the beach and the plateau. The Boe district in the north is Nauru's most densely populated district. There is no official capital, the seat of government and largest city is Yaren.
Nauru has a young population. 31.4% of the population is between 0-14 years, about 65% is between 15-64 years and almost 2.6% of the population is 65+. (2017) The number of births per 1000 inhabitants is about 24. The infant mortality rate is quite low for Micronesia at about 8 per 1000 live births. The average life expectancy is not very high, about 67.4 years.
