The lower regions on the coast of Montenegro have a Mediterranean climate, with dry, hot summers and mild, rainy winters.

Temperatures vary with the altitude. The capital Podgorica, located at sea level, has the highest temperatures in the whole country, averaging 27°C. Cetinje, on the other hand, located at an altitude of about 650 metres, only has an average temperature of 17°C.

In the winter month of January, average temperatures range from 8°C on the southern coast to -3°C in the northern mountainous region. In the regions of Zetska and Bjelopavlicka, in central Montenegro, temperatures can reach 40°C.

It is noteworthy that the mountainous areas of Montenegro receive the most precipitation in the whole of Europe. The annual precipitation in Crkvice, above the Gulf of Kotor, is more than 5000 mm.

Along the Adriatic most of the precipitation falls in winter, high up in the mountains it also often rains in summer. November is normally the wettest month. Snow along the Montenegrin coast is quite rare, but in the mountains the snow can stay for up to four months. In the mountains of Durmitor there is sometimes snow up to five metres thick.

In winter, the cold bora often blows, a north-easterly falling wind that can regularly reach gale force. The bora is treacherous as it often rises without warning.

The sun shines on the coast about 2500 hours per year, up to 2700 hours for Ulcinj.
