Vacations and Sightseeing

Milan is one of the most important and stylish cities in Italy. Most of Milan's main attractions are located in the centre and there is plenty to see. The most important church is the enormous Duomo, the fourth largest cathedral in the world, which has been built for about four centuries. Then there is the Castello Sforzeco, a fortress built in 1368, which was later converted into an elegant and beautiful Renaissance residence. The Scala (opera house) was completed in 1776 and shows beautiful theatrical productions. The Santa Maria delle Grazie is a beautiful church dating back to 1463, which houses 'The Last Supper' by the famous painter Leonardo da Vinci. Read more on the Milan page.

The other major tourist attraction of Lombardy is the lake district. The northern Italian lakes are beautiful and atmospheric, the mountains drop to the lake shore and stately grand hotels dominate pretty towns. Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are particularly famous and have been popular with English, American, German and other international tourists for centuries. Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. It is long and slender with a southern shore of low, rolling hills and a contrasting northern part surrounded by towering mountains. Popular destinations are Desenzano del Garda and Sirmione. Lake Como is quieter and more forested than Lake Garda. You can take a steamer between the resorts and the stately gardens that are often open to the public. Lake Maggiore is Italy's second largest lake, stretching between Lombardy and Piedmont into the Alps. The lake is visited by tourists, especially in the summer, and has atmospheric resorts such as Stresa. The famous gardens of the Borromeo Islands, Isola Bella and Isola Madre make the destination worthwhile.
