Vacations and Sightseeing

Guatemala's tourist attractions range from picturesque Mayan ruins and steaming volcanoes, to lush jungles and little-visited beaches. The ancient Maya built some of their largest cities in Guatemala. Tikal and El Mirador are among the largest pre-Columbian cities in the Americas. Visiting one or both of these cities is one of the more memorable things you can do in Guatemala. Both of these great and unforgettable destinations are located in the sparsely populated, somewhat wild north of Guatemala in the Peten region. Trips to Tikal and El Mirador are often arranged from the tourist-friendly town of Flores.

Apart from the Mayan wonders, there is much more to do in Guatemala. There are mountain lakes, indigenous villages and volcanoes to discover. Beautiful cities such as Antigua, Flores and Panajachel. Eco-tourism is on the rise in Guatemala's lush jungles. The mountainous terrain and steamy lowlands offer plenty of opportunities for an adventurous journey.

Perhaps one of Guatemala's most beautiful attractions is a visit to Lake Atitlan. You can take advantage of everything the area has to offer and it is certainly one of the more popular attractions in Guatemala for tourists. Lake Atitlan is surrounded by volcanoes and lies at an altitude of more than 5,000 metres above sea level. Along the southern shore of Lake Atitlan is the tourist town of Panajachel.

The Chichicastenango market can be easily reached from Guatemala City, Antigua and Quetzaltenango. The Chichicastenango market is held every Thursday and Sunday. It is a colourful, often chaotic affair where the Mayans from all over the country gather to sell their immaculate handicrafts. All kinds of textiles are for sale here, the most popular being the women's blouses made by the Mayan women. Apart from the offer of high quality products, the atmosphere here is what makes the trip worthwhile in itself.

Guatemala City attracts many tourists throughout the year with its beautiful historical sites and active cultural life. There are many interesting museums, the most important in the whole country, as well as numerous galleries with all kinds of Guatemalan art: painting, engraving, sculpture and photography. Theatres present a wide cultural programme, with special attention to national playwrights.
