Besides Spanish, the official language, at least twenty indigenous (Indian) dialects are spoken. The most important are: Quiche, Cakchiquel, Kekchi, Mam, Garifuna and Xinca.

Religion

The majority of the population is Roman Catholic. There are also adherents of Protestantism and traditional Mayan religions.
