Climate and Weather

Due to the influence of the warm Gulf Stream, it is on average somewhat warmer than in the neighbouring countries. It can freeze as low as -15 °C, but this usually does not last longer than a few days. In summer, it can be as warm as 30°C, but temperatures of around 20°C are normal. December and January are dark months with only six hours of sunlight. Rain can fall at any time of year in the form of short, heavy showers. On average, 500-600 mm of precipitation falls in the lower parts of the country and 700-900 mm in the higher areas. About 75% of the precipitation falls as rain, the rest as snow. Spring and autumn are generally cold and wet. In winter, it is sometimes possible to walk or skate across the ice to nearby islands.
