Religion

The Portuguese brought Roman Catholicism to the islands and did not allow (nearly) any other religions. Roman Catholicism, which is adhered to by about 96% of the population, contains elements derived from natural religions. About 3% of the population is Protestant. In the remote areas there are still adherents of the natural religions.
