Vacations and Sightseeing
The road network is limited to 1130 km. Inter-island traffic is maintained by ships and aircraft. There is an international airport on Efate. Tourism has become an important source of income, partly due to Vanuatu's status as a tax-free country.
In 1997, over 50,000 foreign tourists visited the country by plane, spending a total of 30 million dollars. They stayed an average of nine days. In the same year, 30,500 cruise ship passengers visited Vanuatu. They stayed only one or two days. More than 50% of the tourists come from Australia, 14% from New Zealand and 12% from New Caledonia.
Initially, tourism was limited to the islands of Efate, Santo and Tanna to protect the isolated island cultures from the negative aspects of mass tourism. Today, tourists are found throughout the archipelago and facilities are being built. In June 2003, the archipelago opened an underwater post office. While waiting, customers can enjoy coral, shipwrecks and thousands of fish. With this, the tourism bureau wants to draw attention to the many diving locations and the beautiful underwater landscape.
