Population

The population of Somalia is 19 million (2024).

85% of the population is Somali, this people has clans and sub-clans. The three main clans are the Irir, the Darod and the Saab. They in turn consist of many clans and sub-clans. The Irir has the most clans and sub-clans, including the Issak, the clan that declared independence and settled in Somalia. The other inhabitants of Somalia have a Bantu or Arabic background.

Language

The official language of Somalia is Somali. Arabic, English and Italian are also spoken.

Religion

Somalia is a (Sunni) Muslim country. A minority of the population adheres to animistic customs and practises indigenous religions or Christianity.
