Nowadays, Sint Eustatius lives from tourism. During the 1980s, it was possible to obtain a driving licence on Sint Eustatius after a very simple exam, which could be exchanged for a Dutch driving licence in the Netherlands. But this has now come to an end. Sint Eustatius has several hotels and a small airstrip. The historical remains such as Fort Oranje and the still unspoilt nature make Sint Eustatius a good holiday destination for people who like culture and who value their peace and quiet.
Especially ecotourism is on the rise. St. Eustatius has always recognised that its nature and marine life was a precious commodity. The Sint Eustatius National Parks Foundation, known locally as STENAPA is responsible for managing many ecotourism initiatives, both diving and trekking but the Quill, Sint Eustatius' highest volcano (600 m). You will see a semi-tropical rainforest. After the climb to the crater rim, you can catch your breath and have a relaxed look around.
