Population

Papua New Guinea is home to 10 million people (2024). The population density is extremely low with no more than 24 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Population composition:

The population of Papua New Guinea is mainly composed of Papuans. They make up 98 percent of the total population. Chinese and Malaysians make up the remaining part of the population. The Buka live mainly in northern Solomons. The Polynesians live mainly in the south along the coast.

Language

English is spoken by 1-2% of the population, further many Tok Pisin (Pidgin), Motu and more than 700 other languages.

Religion

There are many different religions and hybrids in Papua New Guinea. Here the main movements are Roman Catholic (22%), Lutheran (16%), Presbyterians (8%) United Churches (13%), Anglican (5%), Other Protestants (2%) traditional expression of faith (34%).
