Vacations and Sightseeing
Until 1970, Oman was only visited by businessmen. After that, initially only groups were admitted, later also individual travellers. In 1987, less than 1000 tourists came. Nowadays, more and more tourists come to Oman. From the beginning of the development of the tourist industry, the environment has been closely watched.
At the moment, Oman has six airports and its own airline: Oman Air. Oman also participates in Gulf Air, which is further owned by Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Bahrain. In 1970, there were only 10 kilometres of paved roads; today, there are almost 7,000 kilometres of paved roads in Oman. Most towns are connected by asphalt roads. An extensive bus network provides passenger transport between villages and towns. Express buses run between the major cities. There are no trains.
Muscat the capital of Oman enchants visitors in a way that no other city in the Gulf can begin to match. Perhaps it is because Muscat does not feel artificial like so many other cities in the region. Muscat, Mutrah and Ruwi are the core districts of the city. Muscat, the old port area, is the site of the sultan's main palace and a fascinating place to wander around, but it has no shops or sights apart from the old city walls. Mutrah, just northwest of Muscat, is the main commercial and residential port area. Ruwi is the capital's modern commercial district.
Muscat has some beautiful beaches such as Qurum Beach, Bandar Al-Jissah and Yeti. Public gardens and parks are pleasant to spend time in. The most popular ones are Qurum Natural Park, Riam and Kalbouh.
