Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. There are 416,383 Maltese (2017) living in an area of 316 km2. More than half of the population lives in the urban area around the capital Valetta and Sliema. Some twenty-five villages and towns have grown together. The capital has 9,129 inhabitants and Birkirkara, with 21,600, is the largest of the towns. Since the beginning of the 20th century, many Maltese, especially unemployed young unmarried men, have emigrated. This was due to the relatively large population and the lack of employment opportunities. Between 1948 and 1979, 141,660 Maltese emigrated, while about 24,000 came back. Due to the mixture of cultures, one sees British, Italian and Arab types.
