Population

The population of Malawi is 19,196,246 (2017). The population density is about 162 inhabitants per square kilometre.

The natural population growth rate is 3.31% (2017)
Birth rate per 1000 inhabitants is 41(2017)
Mortality rate per 1000 inhabitants is 7.9 (2017)
Life expectancy is 61.7 years. (men 59.7 and women 63.8 years (2017)

The population consists largely of Negro tribes of Bantu origin. The best known tribes are the Tumbuka, the Nyanja, the Chewa, the Tonga and the Yao.

There are also small minorities of Asians and Europeans living in Malawi.

Language

Malawi has two official languages, Chichewa and English. Furthermore, numerous indigenous languages and dialects are spoken.

Religion

Christianity is mainly spread in the south ( 75%). Muslims live in the north (20%). Besides or at the same time there are followers of indigenous ( animistic ) religions.
