Vacations and Sightseeing
Tourism in Lithuania can develop into an important economic factor, if there is sufficient investment in infrastructure and if hotels, restaurants, etc. are brought up to Western European standards.
The old centre of the capital Vilnius is on the Unesco World Heritage List. The centuries-old Gediminas castle houses the historical museum. There is also a KGB museum in Vilnius where prison tours can be booked under the guidance of an expert. Vilnius is full of beautiful, mostly historic buildings. Architecture lovers will be in for a treat. A great church to visit is the St. Kazimero Church. The richly decorated building is literally crowned with a golden crown on the spire. The Curonian Spit National Park has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2000. The Curonian Spit is located on the south-western peninsula. It is a long, narrow headland of sand dunes near the Baltic Sea. The dunes are phenomenal to explore and sometimes reach a height of 150 metres. The beaches of Smiltyne and Juodkrante in the northern part of the area are among the most popular in the region, but there are also a number of interesting villages on the Russian side.
