Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is a city with a relaxed atmosphere. After the country's turbulent Soviet history, the capital has finally become an oasis of peace. Location

Yerevan is located on the Hrazdan River. The city is located in the province of Marz. Armenia is located in the South Caucasus and has Turkey, Georgia, Iran and Azerbaijan as neighboring countries. Yerevan is located in the west of the country. The city has an area of 29,743 km²and more than 1 million inhabitants.

Weather

The climate of Armenia is described as a moderate continental climate, in the mountains there is a high mountain climate. Yerevan is located at an altitude of between 900 and 1,200 meters. Summers are sunny and dry with temperatures between 22 and 37 degrees.

There is hardly any autumn in Yerevan, because after the end of summer the temperatures drop rapidly and it is almost immediately winters. However, the winter is quite chilly, the average temperature in the winter months is around freezing. There is relatively little rainfall in Armenia all year round. and Yerevan.

History

Yerevan was founded in 782 BC by King Argishti I, but did not officially become the capital of Armenia until 1918. In the meantime, a lot has happened in Yerevan and the surrounding area. The city constantly changed rulers. For example, the city was taken by the Arabs in 658. In total, Yerevan changed hands 14 times during the Turks-Persian Wars between 1513 and 1737.

From the nineteenth century, Saint Petersburg came into play and from 1827 Yerevan fell under Russian rule. Finally in 1918 the city was designated as the capital of the Democratic Armenian Republic, but after 4 years it became part of the Soviet Union again.

During the time when Yerevan was part of the Soviet Union, the city multiplied further . Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Yerevan is not doing so well. The city is emptying out and the population is steadily decreasing with the result that parts of the city are becoming empty.

Sights

In Yerevan, the statue of Mother Armeni to find. The female figure, with a height of 23 meters, overlooks the city and is full of symbolism. She looks towards the Turkish border and holds a sword defensively in front of her. The statue is located on a Soviet square at the end of the Haghtanak (victory) park. From the statue, the view over the city is phenomenal.

Close to Mother Armenia lies the Genocide Museum with accompanying monument, which makes a deep impression on almost all its visitors. It commemorates the Armenian agony during the Ottoman rule from 1915 to 1922.

The History Museum of Yerevan is the national museum of Armenia. The museum has collections in the fields of ethnography, numismatics and archeology. The museum has a large collection of bronze objects from 3000-2000 BC.

Tips Yerevan

The National Art Gallery in Yerevan iIt's totally worth it if you have even the slightest interest in art. The greatest European masters of the former Soviet Union are represented. Big names you can meet there are Rodin, Rubens and Van Dijck, but also Armenians such as Yervand Kochar and Martiros Sarian.
