Vacations and Sightseeing
Sumatra is a major tourist destination of Indonesia. The island has sunny beaches, rich flora and fauna. It is known as the "Africa of Asia". There are tropical rainforests and if you like wild animals then Sumatra is the ideal place for you. Trekking is another option you can choose. Sumatra attracts fewer tourists than its neighbours, Java and Bali. So if you are looking for a quiet holiday away from the crowds then Sumatra is a perfect choice.
Medan is the capital of Sumatra and an ideal gateway for those who want to explore the island. The architecture of the city shows a strong Dutch influence. Some of the more famous attractions in the city include Istana Maimoen, Masjid Raya, the Bank of Indonesia building, the Court of Justice, the Bukit Barisan Military Museum and the Museum of North Sumatra.
Lake Toba is situated at an altitude of about 1000 metres above sea level, this picturesque lake is 175 km from Medan. In the lake is the densely populated island Samsoir and there are tobacco, rubber and palm oil plantations.
The beautiful city of Berastagi is located in the Karo highlands about 70 km from Medan. The city is dominated by two volcanoes Gunung Sinabung and Gunung Sibayak. There are plenty of hiking possibilities and opportunities to spot wildlife in Berastagi. The city is known for its fruit, vegetables and flowers.
