Population
Saba had a population of just under 2,000 in 2017. Half of the inhabitants of Saba are descendants of African slaves. In addition, 200 students reside there, studying at Saba University. A quarter of the inhabitants are called Johnson or Hassell.
Language
The official language is Dutch, but on the Windward Islands the native language is English. Papiamento is spoken by less than 5% of the population. These are mainly Antilleans from the Leeward Islands.
Religion
The Dutch colonists were almost all Protestant. They hardly interfered with the population. Catholic missionaries were much more fanatical in that respect, with the result that most people belong to the Roman Catholic Church, about 90%. There were also some Protestants and Jehovah's Witnesses.
