Vacations and Sightseeing
Tourism is becoming more important over the years and improves the economy. In the south there are white or beige sand beaches. In the north, grey or black sand beaches. As an exception to this rule there is the beach of 'L'anse Noire' near Pointe du Bout in the south where the beach is also black.
Compared to the Windward Islands, Martinique is one of the richest. This is partly due to its membership of the European Union. Social services on the island are comparable to those in France.
Fort de France is the business centre and administrative capital of the island with many tourist attractions. Most of these attractions are grouped around the city's harbour and the green park La Savane. La Savane is a five-hectare public garden with beautiful tropical plants. Fort-de-France Bay is one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Saint Louis Cathedral was built in 1895, it has a bell tower in Roman style. Many of Martinique's former governors are buried in the choir, but the enormous pipe organs attract most attention. The fruit and vegetable market and the fish market are picturesque and colourful. The Schoelcher Library was designed by the architect Henry Pick, it was built in Paris for the World's Fair in 1889, then dismantled and brought back from France and rebuilt here stone by stone in 1893.
