Martinique is a department of France and therefore part of the European Union. The island is represented in the French parliament by four deputies and two senators. There is also a General Council (Conseil General) and a Regional Council (Conseil Regional), but many of the political responsibilities rest with the municipal council of each town.
Economy
Exports of sugar, rum, bananas and pineapples are the main sources of income. Martinique has periods of only harvesting because of the climate sensitivity of the products. Fishing is another important source of income. Of the working population, 75% work in the service sector.
Some recent figures on Martinique's economy: GDP is $23,000 per capita and the unemployment rate is around 18%. Martinique has a structural trade deficit.
