Population

The population of Liberia is 5,437,000 (2024). The population density is about 50 inhabitants per square kilometre.

By far the majority of the population in Liberia belongs to the indigenous African tribes. However, there is great diversity among them. Liberia has 16 main tribes, which are often further subdivided into smaller tribes. The largest tribes are respectively the Kpelle in Central Liberia, the Bassa near Buchanan, the Dan, the Kru along the coast and the Grebo.

Another notable group is that of the American Liberians (descendants of immigrant ex-slaves).

Language

English is the official language of Liberia and is spoken by 20% of the population. Furthermore, many different indigenous languages and dialects are spoken.

Religion

Liberians adhere mainly to Christian religions. 25% call themselves Christian. Muslims make up 12% of the population. In addition, most of the inhabitants of Liberia adhere to indigenous religions.
