The population of Iran is 82.4 million (2024). The population density is over 54 inhabitants per square kilometre.

• The natural population growth rate is 0.88% (2024)
• The birth rate per 1000 inhabitants is 14.3 (2024)
• The mortality rate per 1000 inhabitants is 5.3 (2024)
• Life expectancy is 75.6 years, men 74.3 and women 77.1 (2024)

Population composition

The migrating peoples who passed through Iran produced an ethnically mixed population. The greatest influence comes from Central Asia. Broadly speaking, the following groups can be distinguished:

• Persians 61%
• Azerbaijanis 16%
• Kurds 10%
• Others 13%

Language

The official language of Iran is Farsi (Persian). In addition, many local dialects are spoken, of which Turkish and Kurdish are the most important.

Religion

The majority of the population is Shiite Muslim. In addition, there are religious minorities including Zoroastrians, Sunnis (the Kurds), Jews and Christians.
