Population

The population of Iran is 82,021,564 (2017). The population density is over 50 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Population composition

The migrating peoples who passed through Iran produced an ethnically mixed population. The greatest influence comes from Central Asia. Broadly speaking, the following groups can be distinguished:

Language

The official language of Iran is Farsi (Persian). In addition, many local dialects are spoken, of which Turkish and Kurdish are the most important.

Religion

The majority of the population is Shiite Muslim. In addition, there are religious minorities including Zoroastrians, Sunnis (the Kurds), Jews and Christians.
