Vacations and Sightseeing
The capital Conakry is located on Tumbo Island and is connected to the Kaloum Peninsula by a 300-metre long pier. The city is known for its botanical gardens. The cathedral was built in the 1930s and is located in the centre of the city and is worth a look. There is also a National Museum (Musee National) with a collection of masks, statues and musical instruments. The Palais du Peuple is a large auditorium built by the Chinese. There are numerous restaurants along the main north-south street, the Autoroute (Route du Niger).
The highlands of Fouta Djalon are known for the scenic hills that offer beautiful views and are ideal for hiking. Mamou is a good base, with some good facilities and excellent street food. In the eastern region of Guinea, there are many historic towns with remnants of medieval empires. Along the Nimba Range, which stretches from Guinea to Côte d'Ivoire, are small groups of round houses in traditional African villages. In the south there is the Guinee Forestière, a highland area with rainforest and ancient pre-Islamic tribes.
