Vacations and Sightseeing
Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors. Most tourists come from the French mainland, followed by Swiss tourists; an increasing number of them visit the archipelago by cruise ship. The capital of Guadeloupe, Basse-Terre is beautifully situated at the foot of the active volcano La Soufrière. The national park of Guadeloupe offers good guided walks. Guadeloupe also has excellent beaches. The area around Anse Kahouanne is a good snorkelling location and has beautiful coral reefs.
The Carbet Falls were described by Christopher Columbus in 1493 as "an important source of water with water coming from all sides of the mountain". Their beauty is unblemished against a stunning backdrop of the forested mountainside on the south-eastern slopes of La Soufrière. The three waterfalls are not all equally accessible. The second is the most impressive and easiest to reach.
