About 90 per cent of the population are descendants of slaves from Africa. Five per cent are white, and other groups together make up just under five per cent; they include Lebanese, Indians and Chinese. The population is young: 50 per cent of the population is under the age of 20. In 2017, over 410,000 people lived in Guadeloupe.
Language
French is the official language of Guadeloupe, and Creole-French and English are also widely spoken.
Religion
Of the population, 95% are Roman Catholics. One percent are Protestants. The rest are Hindus or follow an African natural religion.
