Vacations and Sightseeing
Libreville is the largest and most important city in Gabon. The capital city overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is the lively cosmopolitan centre of the country. There are many interesting sights, ranging from historical monuments to beautiful old buildings and paths leading to the lovely beach. The Presidential Palace is closed to the public, but is still a remarkable building, even if you only see it from the outside. It is located just outside Libreville and was built by the former president Omar Bongo in the 1970s. Within the city, you will find the beautiful Cathedral of St Michael and other destinations such as the National Museum and the bustling Mount Bouet Market. This is the best place for bargains in the city.
Gabon's Atlantic coast offers a number of beautiful deserted beaches, suitable for all kinds of water fun. Pointe Denis and Ekwata in the north and Mayumba and Sette Cama in the south are ideal places to enjoy the sun and gentle waves. Other notable places to visit are Port Gentil, Cap Esterias and Perroquet, with good diving opportunities.
Gabon has a total of 13 national parks, although some are inaccessible. The vast Akanda National Park is best known for its lush mangroves and expansive mudflats, home to several species of turtles and migratory birds. The Banteke Plateau is a savannah populated by large mammals such as buffalo, elephant and antelope. Cross the river using rope bridges and admire the breathtaking landscapes. The Cristal Mountains National Park is home to the orchid and has extensive forests. The famous Ivindo National Park is known for the most beautiful waterfalls in the region. Loango National Park has large stretches of virgin beaches, flanked by extensive rainforests. A mix of nature and culture can be found in Lope National Park, which is not only known for its large wildlife and green landscapes, but also has ancient rock paintings.
