Vacations and Sightseeing
Under the motto: 'From Green Hell to Green Paradise' the government strives to promote ecotourism. The biggest attraction of French Guiana is the tropical rainforest, this area is almost untouched and therefore very suitable for the independent traveller. There are also some beautiful beaches to be found in French Guiana and the capital Cayenne is worth a visit with a pleasant city centre and beautiful colonial buildings, such as the Jesuit-built residence of the prefect of Place de Grenoble, the Canal Laussat, and the Botanical Gardens. In the city centre, the Musee Departemental Franconie and the Musee des Cultures Guyanaises have good exhibitions on indigenous peoples and the infamous penal settlements on Devil's Island. Devil's Island is part of the Iles du Salut, where political prisoners were incarcerated. There is a hotel (an ex-mess for the prison guards) on Ile Royale.
