Vacations and Sightseeing
Explore the capital Djibouti city with both a traditional side and expat districts, complete with western restaurants. Wander around the market, noting the sale and consumption of the popular drug called khat, made from the leaves of a plant native to East Africa. The leaves are chewed to give the user a feeling of euphoria. The fish market in Djibouti city can be found on the waterfront and is best enjoyed in the early morning. You have a large choice of freshly caught fish, which is fried right away.
Lake Assal is the lowest point on the African continent. The lake is about 155 metres below sea level. It is also the saltiest water on earth, with almost 35% more salt than the Dead Sea. Salt pans surround the lake where salt is extracted for export to Ethiopia. It is a strange but beautiful sight. It gets very hot at Lake Assal, so don't forget to bring plenty of bottled water.
Khor Ambado is a 45-minute drive from Djibouti city in Tadjoura Bay, this idyllic white sand beach is a wonderful place to snorkel. Discover the reef full of marine life just 35 metres from the shore. It is a popular destination for European tourists but rarely crowded. The Moucha and Maskali islands are about a 45-minute boat ride from the port of Djibouti city. The waters around these islands are a diver's dream with manta rays and several species of sharks living around the islands.
