Aarhus or Arhus is Denmark's second city. It is also Denmark's main port. The population of Aarhus and its suburbs is 310,956 inhabitants. Aarhus offers an elegant mix of cosmopolitan and quaint city with lots of charm, beautiful pubs, restaurants and romantic spots. The average age of the inhabitants is among the lowest in Europe. This is mainly due to the large student population, which creates a lot of atmosphere.

Location

Aarhus is located on the Jutland peninsula at the mouth of the river A. The area is slightly hilly with much agricultural land interspersed with forests. The municipality of Aarhus has a total area of 468 square kilometers.

Weather

Aarhus has a moderate maritime climate and is located on the Jutland peninsula. This region is so large that it has many temperature changes throughout the year. December, January and February are the coldest months of the year in Aarhus, often with night frost. But in the summer months of June, July and August, the daytime temperatures rise to values of 25 °C to 27 °C, sometimes even higher in extremely sunny weather. The number of rainy days is between 120 and 200 days per year. Most rain falls from August to October.

History

Aarhus's history dates back to 770 BC, the city is Scandinavia's oldest larger city. The Diocese of Aarhus dates back to at least 951 and archaeological finds date back to the time of the Vikings. There are fortifications south of the city from the time of the German imperial campaigns between 1627 and 1629. In 1644 Sweden levied heavy taxes and between 1657 and 1659 Aarhus was occupied at various times by Swedish troops. Aarhus gained independence from Copenhagen and Hamburg in the 19th century. In the course of the 20th century, Aarhus grew into the largest city in Jutland and Denmark's second largest city.

Aarhus has many attractions. Tourists from all over the world come to visit the city. A major tourist attraction in Aarhus is The Old Town (Danish: Den Gamle By), which is actually not an old part of the city itself, but a collection of historic Danish buildings from all over the country. You can take a look at the old houses, living rooms and workshops. The staff is dressed in old costumes.

Aarhus is also home to the Tivoli Friheden theme park. That is theme park within walking distance of the city center in the Marselisborg Forest. There are 4 roller coasters, 40 rides, stalls, games, playgrounds and a new live combat game.

Other tourist attractions include: Arhus Domkirke, the largest cathedral in Denmark, Telecommunication Tower and Aarhus Town Hall. Aarhus also has a botanical garden and the Aarhus Art museum, this is the most important museum in Aarhus and also one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe.

Prehistoric finds can be seen in the Forhistorisk Museum Moesgård. Among other things, there is a mummified corpse of a man. This so-called Graubelle Man was found in a swamp in 1952 and is estimated to be at least 2000 years old.

Tips

Many residents of Aarhus love pub life and see cafés as their second living room. The cafes are frequented by people of all ages.

Strøget is a well-known shopping area with about 100 stores in total. In this shopping paradise you will find everything your heart desires. This pedestrian zone stretches between Central Station and the cathedral.

On the other side of the city, past the cathedral, is the 'Quartier Latin' - Aarhus's oldest district. There are many design shops in the narrow streets.
