There are approximately 250 tribes in the Democratic Republic of Congo which can be roughly categorised into five main groups. These are the Bantu tribes, who form the majority, the Sudanese, the Nilots, the Pygmies and the refugees. The Pygmies are the original people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but today they are the minority.
Language
The official language of the Democratic Republic of Congo is French. Lingala, Kikongo, Tshiluba and Kiswahili are also spoken, as well as numerous local languages and dialects.

The population of the Democratic Republic of the Congo includes adherents of Christianity (Roman Catholic 50%, Protestant 20%), Islam (10%) and indigenous religions (20%).
