Vacations and Sightseeing
Zambia has enormous potential for tourism. Unfortunately, there is no money in the state treasury for the development of this and they are completely dependent on private initiative. To attract more tourists, good management of the nature reserves and improved infrastructure is necessary. For example, of the nineteen national parks, only five are currently accessible by car. Furthermore, many forests are being cut down for agriculture and charcoal production. As far as wildlife is concerned, poaching will have to be dealt with severely.
If the renovation and reorganization of the tourism sector is handled well, Zambia with its national parks and the Victoria Falls, among others, will have world-class tourist attractions.
Nevertheless, tourism is a growth sector because in the mid-1990s it received $30 million in foreign currency; by 2001 that figure had risen to $117 million.
The capital of Zambia is Lusaka. Lusaka has an interesting local market where tourists can get a glimpse into the lives of the people. There is everything for sale from exotic fruits and vegetables to handicrafts. Lusaka is home to the National Museum, with a lot of Zambian art, both from ancient times as well as a collection of modern paintings and sculptures. You will also see an overview of the history of Zambia.
