The population of Turkmenistan is 5,351,277 (2017). The population density is very low with about 11 inhabitants per square kilometre.
85% of the population is Turkmen. Ethnically and linguistically, the Turkmen are close to the Turks. There are five tribes: the Tekke, Sariki, Salori, Jomut and Ersari. The rest of the population is Russian or Uzbek (near the Uzbek border). Small percentages of Kazakhs, Tartars, Azerbaijanis and Armenians also live in Turkmenistan.

Language
The official language of Turkmenistan is Turkmen. In the cities, Russian is also spoken.
Religion
Many Turkmen are Sunni Muslims or follow the Islamic Sufi tradition. There are also just under 10% Russian Orthodox.
