Vacations and Sightseeing
Temples and shrines, art treasures, lakes, spectacular scenery, hiking, beaches, dining, deep-sea fishing, gardens, and diving and snorkelling are among Taiwan's major tourist attractions and activities.
Taipei is the capital city in the northern part of Taiwan. Important sights include the Taipei City Gate, the Long Shan Temple, the Bao An Palace and the Confucius Temple. The Taipei 101 was once the tallest building in the world (508 metres). There are many shops on the lower floors and many good restaurants on the upper floors.
The Palace Museum, formerly known as the Sun Yet-Sen Museum is built between the mountains and is designed like a palace. It was built to the design of the Forbidden City in Beijing with red railings and green glazed tiles. The landscape with beautiful mountains covered by dense forests is close to the building. The Palace Museum houses a large number of collections of national treasures from Chinese history.
The Taroko National Park is known for its gorge and canyon landscape. The park is located just north of the city of Hualien on the east coast. Surrounding the gorge with limestone cliffs that stretch to the sea, Mt Nanhu is the highest mountain at 3740 metres. The park covers an area of 227,336 hectares and is one of seven national parks in Taiwan. Taiwan is a very mountainous island and the area of the seven national parks make up 8.5% of Taiwan's total land area.
Taiwan's largest lake, Sun Moon Lake, is a favourite tourist spot with its stunning views of the surrounding mountains and almost always pleasant climate. After the devastating earthquake of 1999, new hotels were built and beautiful nature trails were created. Rowing boats and motor boats are available for hire.
